In 2012, the city of San Diego began a series of construction projects to make the harbor more pleasant and accessible. A mile-long horizontal park was designed so people can walk along the water and also enjoy landscape.

San Diego commissioned an artist named Pae White to design a series of artistic pavilions to help enhance the experience. Carnitas’ Snack Shack agreed to finish the second pavilion for the city and hired BNIM to complete the restaurant design, coordinate between overlapping jurisdictions and assist with construction administration.

When BNIM began the project, the metal canopy and structure was already built but the colored glass skin, kitchen, bar and utilities still needed design.
