American Embassy in Havana

During the embargo, the U.S. Embassy in Havana has been a site of huge mistrust and protest. Additions to the embassy included enclosing the original courtyard and adding peripheral buildings causing the embassy to architecturally appear like a bunker. The Cuban government built their police headquarters on one side and a harsh flag park to block American messages on the other. The existing site suffers form political compression.

U.S. EMBASSY IN HAVANA

Mentor: Casey Mahon

Project Site: Havana, Cuba

Project Type: Office Addition

Project Size: 30.000 S.F.

A proposal for an addition of 30,000 S.F. might have an opportunity to help strengthen relationships between Cuba and America and relieve political compression.  This design proposal focuses on creating a large amount of public space through shade. To achieve this goal, a 100-foot cantilever containing new office space was designed to hang over a new public plaza. The public plaza enjoys views of El Malecon and the Caribbean. It also is meant to act as a space to periodically display local art which is supported by the embassy’s outreach center.
